Out Blooms Hope, Digital Illustration
Theme: From fears to dreams
Higher Distinction, School Category, 2020

Artist statement:
The yellow flowers are based on Verbascums, which symbolise courage, protection and health in the flower language. Though I have no experience in the matter of organ transplant, I can only imagine how scary it must be to be in that situation, thus I compared it to one sinking into a dark void, as drawn at the bottom portion. This void is however, filled by light from the 'heart' given to the recipient (in patient's attire) by the organ donor which then causes the flowers to bloom. The heart acts as a ray of hope to the recipient, a reminder that they still have much to live for, and can live for, thanks to the organ donor. Fear felt by the recipient upon the situation they are in (in need of an organ) is therefore soothed, as if saying that it is okay and now they have a second chance. The organ donation also serves to “protect” the health of the recipient. Hence the Verbascums, which twist through twigs to branch out into a bigger, stronger plant above-- symbolising the dreams and goals the recipient can achieve upon surviving.
