Scion, Print Making & Marker
Theme: From fears to dreams
Higher Distinction, Open Category, 2020

Artist statement:
Scion in botany is defined as a sprout or bud detached from a living portion of a plant, and joined to a stock in grafting. Paving a new journey for said sprout; parallel to organ donation and transplantation, breathing hope and possibilities to both donee and supporting next-of-kin. Depicted in the artwork is a grown figure in a foetal position, much like a foetus in a mothers womb; comforting, safe and secure. Though barren, a tree remains resilient and sturdy, weathering through harsh conditions. When flipped, the image takes on a rooting seedling, coming full circle to a new beginning, overcoming fears with another step closer to dreams.
With the image of the strength shown in patients with organ failure and their loved ones, the short poem featured in the artwork is in honour of their courage.
