First Place, School Category, 2021

Artist statement:
In my painting, I painted organic forms like flowers and plants to represent life; like the beauty of living and the bleakness of death. The bridge represents the connection between the recipient and the donor. One island is greyish blue and the inspiration comes from glaciers. Representative of the recipient, it shows an island floating in the darkness, searching for hope. Their pains are like an iceberg, something that no one can fully comprehend. However while much support is given to them, the physical fight is up to themselves to win. They are alone, desperately clinging onto whatever life is left, searching for hope. A donor is like a breath of life, a bridge that connects them to reality, bringing life and hope to their darkness. The other island’s inspiration is from nature, painted like the bark of a birch tree to represent new beginnings, with evergreen ferns representing how the donor will never be forgotten.
