Bridge of Hope, Colour Pencil
Theme: Bridge of Hope
High Distinction, School Category, 2021

Artist statement:
This artwork is composed of a heart at the centre of a few other elements: a pair of bridges fused into a length of velvety lace-like substance, an off white homunculus, and a hand that hangs as a chandelier above the rest. The textile emanates from a figure clad in the same material, which is found at the base of the design. The homunculus-like bears a pastel blue, slightly tinged with skin’s beige. This symbolises the porcelain beauty of this action of donation, and how it seems to transcend human kindness into something more innate and vital. Layers of the textile spread from the outstretched hand of the figure into a pair of bridges, that symbolise the titular theme of ‘Bridge of Hope’. They uncoil back into tendrils of the textile that caress the fingertips of the recipients hand above. This illustrates how beautifully such a noble deed graces one. At the centre of artwork is a blue, ethereal heart, flanked by the two bridges, which symbolises the soul behind each and every transplantation, and the essence of giving. The je ne de sous centres around the gossamer essence of a transplant of hope, and its basic lustre.
