Theme: In Search of Hope
High Distinction, Open Category, 2021

Artist statement:
The girl is trapped in a cage created by her own hands. She sits there quietly, creating doll versions of herself, each with their unique set of skills. From warriors and mages to artists and alchemists, the possibility is endless. But one thing is for sure, they all share a common goal of breaking the cage. This piece symbolises how organ failure patients are trapped in a cell that is their body, like a bird trapped in a cage. They are unable to have the freedom like the others. This, in turn, may cause some patients to lose their colours to the harsh reality of life and fall into a state of despair and emptiness, or worse, lose their will to live. Through this piece, I want to show them that not all hope is lost. Even though it may seem to be a dark and scary time in your life, and that letting go is the only option left, please know that it is not the end. There are still many things to look forward to in life. As long as you are willing to break the invisible cage of the mind, anything is possible, even freedom. There is a saying that the mind and body are not separate. What affects one, affects the other. So please, as the search for organs continues, find your way of happiness with a little bit of imagination. Be the you that is most courageous, creative, smart and strong. That way, you too can break free from the cage that is your mind and live life to the fullest.
