Artist statement:
The common man uses his eyes not only for sight. At the glimmer of their eyes, tales of their innermost feelings and emotions unfold, freely and willingly. The eye is therefore depicted in the position of the mouth, as I believe both organs bear the same powerful function of self-expression: When the mouth verbalises an image, the eyes paints a vision. At the impairment of the eyes, one loses a crucial part of themselves, and I attempt to signify this through the fragmented threads of the skin and the bleeding underneath the white cloth. I also wish to empower both people who have lost such vital body parts as the eyes, as well as donors who have selflessy contributed their organs towards the greater good. This is hightlighted through the cracking thunderbolt detail in the character's hair, in which I made a reference to lightning - an important symbolism for the impressive power that these people possess to undergo difficult times, and the exceptional courage to 'live on'.
