Artist statement:

This illustration portrays lung failure and what it would look like when these failing lungs are trying to express themselves. They are stifling as I illustrated them to be submerged underwater, just below the surface while they are trying to regain their functions. Swirling smoke depicts that there are complications, however, the complications are not visible underwater just as lung failures are inconspicuous at first glance. Even so, when this smoke rises; to be visible on the surface of the water, they will become indications which should be interpreted as the symptoms of lung failure. Our organs cannot speak for themselves and so I would like to highlight the importance of the symptoms posed by our bodies as they are expressions to warn us about organs we cannot see, such as the lungs.
