Submitting Death in Exchange for Life, Mixed Media (Pen & Watercolour)
Theme: Our Transformative Journey
Special Mention, Open Category, 2023

Artist statement:
My artwork features two characters who are grapplers in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The grappler on the ground is fighting against Death (the grappler on top) for a functioning heart organ. Here, she is locking Death in a submission known in BJJ as a triangle - where one throws up their hips and their legs, locks them around the opponent's neck to cause discomfort and a choke to come on. Should the opponent refuse to tap to signal for the submission to be let go of, they would eventually lose consciousness.
This narrative represents the desire of the grappler to achieve a better life for herself. Facing Death as an obstacle, she needs to dig deep to find the grit and acquire the skills required to overcome the possibility of death and a hope of a new organ for a healthier life. In doing so, there is not only a transformation in the mindset (from despair to hope), but spilling over to the physical side of the grappler (from a state of helplessness, to gaining different offensive strategies to wield combat).
This narrative also parallels the idea of one's 'heart' where they show willingness to fight for victory. In this case, she is fighting for her life, represented by the heart organ that is in the hands of Death.
