Hearts on the Clock, Mixed Media (Gouache, Watercolour)
Theme: Making a difference starting with me
Distinction, School Category, 2024

Artist statement:
Through this artwork, I wanted to show that people's hearts were on the clock, and time was running out for them. Yet there is still hope, as long as someone does something to make a difference. The different colours used to paint the heart show the different physical and emotional impacts of organ donation on different people. For those in need of a heart transplant, the heart represents their actual organ, expressing that they have a limited amount of time to live while waiting for a transplant. As for their family members, the heart represents the hope they have, which slowly dies along with their loved one's heart. The white daisies growing on the clock and the cogs represent how those in need of a heart may feel. The daisies represent how time can be freeing and beautiful like a wildflower growing even in the harshest conditions. This shows how those in need of a heart see time: something they want, hope to have, but sometimes can't, only if we make a difference. Only if we take on the responsibility of spreading the word of the importance of organ donation can we let them have a chance at life. Meanwhile, the cogs represent the constant, slow movement of time that they may have, as if it is only a matter of time before it runs out. Through the contrast between this optimistic and pessimistic view, I hope to make people consider which one they want to make others feel - hope or fear? Whichever it is, only their actions - their decisions - can change it.
