Artist statement:
With gratitude through the act of organ donation being the main theme of the artwork, my artwork demonstrates how compassion, bravery, and our common humanity binds people and families together. The entire composition is wound with a long orange string. The string connects people and stories as it moves through the artwork. An organ recipient is symbolised by the central figure on the bicycle, continuing with a fresh start in life. The recipient families, who are volunteers, are positioned on the left and right. In moments of extreme gratitude, they chose to improve the lives of others. Their inclusion in the artwork celebrates the influence and reverberations of those who give, which in turn inspires others to give. The donor who uplifted the family is symbolised by the wrist. The emotions and sentiments of thankfulness are symbolised by the campanula flowers. Family members who volunteer serve as a reminder that gratitude is more than just a feeling, it can have a positive social impact. Together, they prove that gratitude is not only an everlasting emotion felt by the recipient and families, but also a force for change that pushes them towards active participation towards new acts of giving.
