Artist statement:
I chose to display the profound and often invisible bond between those giving life and those receiving it— through the timeless act of organ donation. Each clock nestled in the shelves of a clockmaker’s shop represents lives that could be saved: and in the very center of each clock is the key to saving them. The act of keeping time morphs into a stand-in for the borrowed years gifted by donors. The clockmaker represents the hand of generosity, sacrifice and human kindness. The recipient, receiving a glowing timepiece with a much-needed organ in its midst, represents the sheer gratitude felt when someone literally lengthens one’s life. The shop’s nameplate, “Time Borrowed, Life Honoured”, reinforces the delicate significance of the tribute. This piece honours not only the donors themselves, but also the families who choose to pass on the spark of life; reflecting the shared gratitude of both the recipient and their family of having a second chance at life.
