Theme: Organic Perspectives

Artist statement:

My artwork is my interpretation of perspectives of organs after death. The liver queues up in front of a gumball machine, not as a lifeless biological part, but as an emotionally aware organism. The machine, “life lottery”, decides its fate, like a gamble of destiny. Each orb inside the machine shows a possible outcome for the organs. Some orbs contain another chance at life, memories yet to be made - happy, loving, and curious. The organs that get these orbs will be donated after death, and given another chance to live on. Although they no longer remain in their original body, they will witness new experiences, travel the world, forge new memories, feel the emotions in their new body. Some orbs are empty, symbolising that the organs are buried with the deceased, their journeys hence ending. They never receive the opportunity to continue existing or serving another life. This gumball machine is a symbol which carries a deeper meaning. The randomness of receiving orbs represents how organs have no control over their future, but rather, it is up to our choices. Choosing to donate organs allows not just the organs to live on, but a part of the deceased person too. The forest’s purple color and fungi represent rebirth and hope, enhancing the atmosphere. Organ donation is not simply about replacing a failing organ, but also about extending life and memories beyond death. From the organs’ perspective, death is not necessarily the end, but instead the beginning of another journey.
