Artist statement:

This artwork tells the emotional story of a young boy whose life changed after a devastating car crash. In the centre of the composition, the boy faces himself, symbolising the battle between survival and hopelessness. The lungs and kidneys shown on his clothing represent the organs damaged during the accident, while his blank expression reflects the depression and loneliness he experienced while bedridden in the hospital. The surrounding black-and-white sketches portray the pain and destruction caused by the tragedy. The storm clouds, lightning, damaged vehicles and lifeless tree symbolise fear, suffering and emotional emptiness. At the bottom of the artwork, the detailed hands connected to the heart monitor represent the fragile connection between life and death, while also symbolising support and care. The most meaningful part of the artwork is the group of friends and the protective hands above the boy. These represent the three friends who donated parts of their organs - the kidneys and lungs - to save his life. Their sacrifice not only healed him physically but also gave him the strength and hope to continue living. The red border surrounding the coloured portrait symbolises life, love and the strong bond of friendship. Overall, the artwork explores themes of survival, sacrifice and hope, showing how compassion and friendship can help someone overcome even the darkest moments of their life.
