Theme: Alternate Perspectives

Artist statement:

In this artwork, I wanted to reimagine organ donation as a grand marching band performance, as a celebration of life carried forward through many people, perspectives, and acts of compassion. Instead of portraying organ donation only between the donor and recipient, I wanted to explore the ripple effects it creates within an entire community, but in the form of music. At the top of the composition stands a doctor as the conductor of the band. Just like a conductor guiding musicians into harmony, doctors orchestrate the delicate transplant process with much precision and responsibility. Yet the conductor does not create the music alone. Surrounding him are marching band performers carrying organs as instruments: a heart transformed into a wind instrument breathing life forward, kidneys clashed like cymbals, and musicians pulling flowing strands of music like harp strings, symbolising the emotional 'heartstrings' connecting people together. The circular, fluid movement of the composition pose as both soundwaves and ripples, showing how one act of donation continues outward to affect countless others, and representing compassion being passed from person to person, like a melody that never truly ends. The audience at the bottom of the artwork represents the alternate perspective of ordinary people witnessing these stories from afar. The young girls symbolise curiosity, hope, and future generations learning to see organ donation not as something frightening, but as an act of humanity and compassion. In this way, the viewers themselves may also become part of this audience, invited to reflect on the meaning of giving life to others. Lastly, the butterfly emblem emblazoned onto the marching hats combines the image of an ear with butterfly wings, representing rebirth, sound, and continuity, just like how donated organs allow life, movement, and connection to continue even after loss. Through this whimsical 'Marching Band of Life', I wanted to transform the operating theatre into a stage and organ donation into symphony of compassion, where every person - from doctors, patients, families, witnesses, and future generations - play a part in carrying the music forward.
