Artist statement:
This work explores the fragile boundary between identity and perception through the imagined perspective of a transplanted eye. Centered within the composition is a ribbon, symbolising the idea of a 'gift'. It represents the act of donation, carrying with it gratitude, loss, and an intimate connection between two lives that will never fully meet. Beyond the ribbon lies an open landscape of grass and sky, rendered in bright, hopeful tones. This environment reflects renewal: the recipient’s regained ability to see, and with it, a reawakening to the world. A blurred, glowing silhouette of a man appears in the distance, unresolved and unfamiliar. He exists in a state of partial recognition, as if he has not fully 'loaded' into the eye’s perception. His indistinct form reflects the dissonance of seeing through something that once belonged to someone else, raising questions about memory, ownership, and the limits of empathy. Through this layered imagery, the work reflects on transplantation not just as a medical procedure, but as a deeply human exchange. It considers how vision is more than sight alone - it is shaped by experience, identity, and the invisible histories we carry within us.
