Theme: Organic Perspectives

Artist statement:

This artwork explores organ transplantation from an often unheard perspective: the quiet voice of the organ itself. Within a storm of uncertainty, loss, and illness, the organ becomes a small but powerful glimmer of hope, carrying life from one story into another. On the right side of the composition, a child sits beneath a cloud heavy with rain. The falling drops represent struggle, illness, and the long waiting that many patients endure. The umbrella offers protection, yet the world around remains grey, reflecting the fragile space between despair and perseverance. At the centre of the piece, a small glowing heart rests in the child’s hands. Rather than simply representing a medical procedure, the heart symbolises a traveller – an organ that has journeyed from one life to another. Though it once belonged to a different body, it continues to beat with purpose. In this moment, the organ becomes a messenger of renewal, carrying warmth and vitality into a life that needed it most. From this heart flows a vibrant rainbow stretching across the page. The colours illuminate the darkness, transforming the storm into something hopeful. Each band of colour represents resilience, gratitude, and the unseen connection between donor and recipient. Even though one life has ended, its gift expands outward like light, creating beauty where there was once uncertainty. The stars scattered within the rainbow symbolise small glimmers of hope – the quiet miracles that occur when compassion transcends loss. They remind us that organ transplantation is more than a medical act; it is a continuation of life’s energy, moving gently from one human story into another. Through this piece, I imagine the organ not as something lost, but as something that chooses to keep shining. Even after leaving its first home, it continues to give warmth, colour, and possibility. Because sometimes hope arrives quietly – like a small heart glowing in the rain - and from it, an entire sky of colour can emerge.
