Artist statement:

The lungs, being the main subject of the artwork, appears to be half healthy, half withered. The left lung appears to be full of life, springing with bright colours and spiral designs, along side blooming flowers. On the other hand, the right lung is coloured with dull and gloomy colours, showcasing it as a dying, lifeless lung. Additionally, the black spots and patches scattered on the right lung showcases the lung having its health slowly deteriorating as it slowly draws closer to death. Above these two lungs are a pair of eyes, the left eye looking upwards in hope, sparkling at what hope it has at living, while the right pupil appears to be strained, coloured with a cool tone of orange, veins visibly popping out of the pupil. In the middle of this is the heart, forming what looks like a nose in between the pair of lungs and eyes. Beneath this "face" is a mouth, with the left half of rows of teeth looking sparkly white and healthy, while the right half of teeth rotting, deteriorating and slightly chipped off. The overall imagery of this 'face' is divided by an invisible line of half healthy, half dying body parts. This can show how some people experience hope as they receive a lung donor, and how the body can light up the moment the healthy lung is replaced into the body. The dying half of the body is slowly being replaced with healthier body parts, showing how death seems to escape, and instead being filled up with hopes for a brighter future. The eyes seem to be looking forward and upward, as if up to heaven, showing that the new lung organ is like a miracle from heaven - a gift from God. The swirling mix of popping bright colours surrounding the face seems to give the feeling of how the idea of getting a new, working lung seems so unbelievable, it might feel trippy or unreal. It gives off the feeling that such a miracle is out of this world, further showcasing the ecstasy of the recipient of the lung.
