Artist statement:
My illustration shows a heart-shaped formation of human-like figures intertwining, holding, supporting and comforting one another. It reflects how a surgeon may feel about the heart in surgery, showing it as a symbol of many possibilities, futures and human connections which represent universal experiences of care, empathy and protection during a heart transplant surgery. The green leaves and the flower-like bushes surrounding the figures show signs of life, growth, healing, and new beginnings, whereas the cloud-like smoke behind represents safety and shelter, like a protective wall that protects the figures which makes them feel like there is a safe place around them. The radial lines and the scattered dots behind the cloud-like smoke shows the ripple effect of organ donation, which can mean someone’s act of giving can spread further and change many lives within the community. The great vessels of the aorta at the top represent pipe organs, with the music playing shows how it shapes the community with warmth, celebration and life. Overall, my illustration shows that the heart is not only just an organ, but a symbol of connection, care, and the life that we all share to a surgeon’s view.
