Artist statement:
My artwork explores organ donation from the perspective of a transplanted kidney, imagined as a new root of life that experiences the journey of a recipient. The kidney is represented as a flower pot repaired through Kintsugi, with vibrant flowers growing from it, symbolising healing and blooming vitality of life in the recipient that the kidney witnesses and catalyses. Attached to the pot, a 'thank you' tag honours the unspoken bond between donor and recipient. While the light reflects the warmth the kidney feels starting this new journey, it contrasts the shadow behind where the pot is shown to be broken with withering flowers, bound to a water bottle. This represents past struggles of dialysis treatments, uncertainty and weakness that the recipient endured. Through this piece, I wanted to show that organs are not just biological parts that are transferred, they are the continuity of life itself. If organs truly possessed senses, they would carry stories of each journey they witnessed, reflecting how organ donation is vital to the renewal of life.
