Artist statement:
The artwork is depicted from a third-person perspective. It captures a powerful moment of joy and relief shared between a young recipient of cornea donation and his mother, reflected within the pupils of the donee. I aim to illustrate the emotions of the child and their family, their awe, hope, and overwhelming gratitude as the child may get to experience clear vision again. This use of reflection draws the audience into the scene, allowing them to witness the moment from a third party’s point of view. It becomes more than passive observation as viewers are invited to emotionally connect with the experience, resonating with the satisfaction that the donee may feel. The artwork invites the audience to ponder on the gift of sight and how it might be more than a physical ability but a way to connect with the world. This also helps the audience further understand the importance and weight of cornea donations, being able to pass on the gift of sight and connection, so that others may enjoy it.
