Hear from our esteemed judges

Ms Sally Kong (Deputy Director, National Organ Transplant Unit, Ministry of Health)
LOF - Design & Essay Competition Judging Panel
“In both the Design and Essay Competition, it is very clear how very passionate our young persons are once they are made aware of the gravity of suffering because of end stage organ failure and how organ donation it impacts the families.
The design entries certainly enthralled me with the kaleidoscope of colors, emotions and techniques employed. Every piece tells its own story which is unique, a true master piece! Organ donation and transplantation, a very difficult subject portrayed in a piece of art.
The expression of emotions - joy, sadness, despair, excitement, gratitude and love exudes with such intensity from the pieces. It is also so interesting to have the artists’ perspectives of everyday things that are associated with organ donation and transplantation. A picture that says a thousand words, a picture that encapsulates the artists’ thoughts and emotions.
Judging such high quality entries is indeed difficult- bringing me countless times to return to the pieces for a second or third review. It is a privilege to witness such creativity from our young artists.
The expository essays are well researched with the subject analysed in depth and arguments presented in a cohesive and succinct manner. Letters that makes the greatest impact are those that are able to make an emotional and personal connection with the recipients. The ability to understand what is really important to the recipients and to be able to reach out in a non-condescending manner not just flooding with hard facts and figures. The fine balance of an effective approach.
The Live On Festival has provided a platform for our young to be exposed to some of the harsh realities and sufferings in life that could plague anyone. Knowledge can bring about societal change and through writing it provides understanding and meaning.”

Ms Sabrina Long (Dean, Faculty of Art and Design/Principal, School of Young Talents Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts)

“It has been very rewarding to see the creativity and execution of the 2 themes in the student and open categories. The enthusiasm and exploration is clearly visible in this year’s entries and I hope to see more of such articulation – through various applications, mediums and visual concepts, in the future. This will not only elevate the quality of the entries but also, it will become a great platform to recognise important values and themes that are employed in the competition. My warmest congratulations to all winners and seeing their ideas being realised.”

Mr Mark Lim (Creative Director, Splash Production)
LOF - Design Competition Judging Panel
“It has been an honour to be called upon to be part of this year’s LOF judging panel. And after going through the submissions, I have been left humbled and inspired. There were many standout pieces in terms of technical and artistic skills. But coming from a design communications background, I was specifically looking out for the concept and artistic interpretation behind each artwork. I was not left disappointed. Many submissions showed depth and maturity in bringing the theme to life. Many offered unique and insightful perspectives to the topic of organ donation. In all, I am encouraged not only by the thinking that went into the work, but also by the heart that many put into their art pieces. Well done to all participants!"

Mr Roy Poh (Creative Director, A Beautiful Design)

“Art is subjective. All these wonderful entries were created based on personal feelings and emotions of the artists when creating them. And for all these artists to find time and effort to participate in this meaningful event, full marks to all!
Objectively, like in all competitions, there’ll be good, and there’ll be better entries based on things we can critic on, like adherence to theme, technical merit and also my humble personal opinion. Unfortunately, not everyone will walk away with prizes. But one thing everyone should be proud of, is that, you put your heart (no pun intended) into this.”

Mr Jonathan Yuen (Creative Director, Roots)
LOF - Design Competition Judging Panel
“The overall quality for both open and school submissions is high and commendable. It is a pleasure to look through the artworks and be exposed to various interpretations and expressions for this year’s theme. There are hidden gems, and these serve to prove future generations of designers and artists are here today. I sincerely hope this competition encourages those with a keen interest in art and design fields to pursue their career inspirations.
Follow your heart.”
